The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention’s forte has always been infectious disease control. For example, CDC’s response to the Ebola virus a few years ago was stellar. Now, not so much.
Fair or not, CDC is quickly becoming the scapegoat for our nation’s poor response to COVID-19. As a former Senior Service Fellow at CDC , I saw the agency at both its worst and best. Never however, have I seen CDC function so poorly. This begs the question, why?
I suspect the main reason for the agency’s fall has been “brain drain’. Well before the Trump era, I noticed a mass exodus of some of CDC’s most capable scientists, leaving only stereotypical federal employees behind. In my opinion, many of the core employees lack the requisite expertise and commitment. This appears particularly problematic in divisions like the Strategic National Stockpile, who are being widely criticized for their incompetence.
